Riaz Meghji
Host, Breakfast Television
After earning a BBA from Simon Fraser University back in 2002, I was well on my way to a lucrative and relatively secure career path in the financial world, but something was missing. Entertaining, engaging and enlightening an audience have always been great passions and given the fact climbing the corporate ladder wasn’t exactly the best vehicle to accomplish these goals, I did a 180 and took the chance of pursuing a career in the entertainment world. During my very first gig as a Roving Reporter in radio promotions for the old Z953FM, I managed to capture the attention of the MTV Canada higher ups and joined the production team in Vancouver.
Within a short time, the hard work paid off as I soon became Entertainment Host/Producer for their flagship show “969”, earning a 2005 Leo Award Nomination for Best Host. After writing comedic editorial segments, along with honing my craft as a show host, MTV graciously rewarded my efforts with the challenge of handling the A-List interviews that passed through Hollywood North. Still wanting to learn more about television in a live environment, I fought for the position of Weathercaster on a competing station, becoming one of the youngest on-air personalities to contribute to the CTV Weekend News team. By day, I was up to my usual playful antics, engaging celebrities ranging from Miss Piggy to Matthew McConaughey, while still facilitating thought provoking discussions about the future of movies and music with the likes of Kevin Smith and Pink, respectively. By night, I was dictating low pressure systems in a suit and tie in the newsroom, taking in all I could about the industry. Recruited by Toronto’s SUN TV in 2005, I took on the next challenge and moved across the country to write for and eventually anchor entertainment for the show ‘Inside Jam’ and the current affairs program ‘Canoe Live’.
From 2006 to 2008, I covered the illustrious Red Carpet premieres and parties for Bell TV’s ‘Festival Access’ at the Toronto International Film Festival, field directed the reality show ‘Beautiful People” for Tricon Films and Television and launched my own production company ‘Celebrity Receptions’. With the belief that life experience is essential to being a good interviewer, traveling has always been made a priority in between gigs, with trips to Puerto Rico, Australia, Eastern/Western Europe, Peru, Pakistan and the Middle East all under my belt. These particular adventures left a lasting impression as to how crucial a journalistic flow of information is and just how important a good laugh can be. I am driven by a passion, inspired by creative minds and when it comes to Breakfast Television, I am thrilled to be back in Vancouver helping you wake up every morning. See you at 6am.
