Silence is Not An Option: Kara Walker

Mon, Feb 26

1414 Argyle Ave, West Vancouver, BC V7T 1C2, Canada map

This lecture will explore the extraordinary work of African American contemporary painter, print-maker, film-maker and installation artist Kara Walker. Walker confronts systemic racism in her art, not just in its past manifestations, but also its ongoing persistence (as evidenced in the rise of the alt-right in the U.S.). By tapping into visual spectacle, epic narrative traditions, genteel crafts, and myths of the American South, Walker refuses to soften her point and creates an art of resistance.
Cost: $15
Register by phone at 604-925-7270 (course # 41540) or online. Drop-ins welcome space permitting.

Stanley Park: Digging Deeper and Rethinking Cultural Heritage

Tue, Feb 27

1489 McRae Ave, Vancouver, BC V6H 1T7, Canada map

The appreciation and understanding of Stanley Park is broadening and deepening, as thousands of years of First Nations presence are better understood beyond the colonial history. With this context, Rena Soutar (Cha’an Tdut) and Geordie Howe will consider how we define “our cultural heritage” as a city. They will explore the Indigenous peoples’ relationships to the land, the approach to stewardship and how the environment was cultivated to support communities. The park and the city have an incredibly long and rich history, with lessons to teach that are not only valuable, but also critically important to ensure all of our sustainability.
